In providing protection and support to human rights defenders, Front Line Defenders and its staff are committed to: – emphasizing the primacy and centrality of defenders; – demonstrate deep respect and empathy for advocates; – respond to the needs expressed by advocates quickly, flexibly and relentlessly; – achieve a tangible effect; – act with independence, impartiality and integrity; – work with dedication, professionalism and responsibility; – be transparent and open; – develop participatory and cooperative relations. – Collect information on the situation of human rights defenders in Africa (with particular emphasis on the issues identified by the SR); – Develop, in coordination with other thematic mechanisms and geographical actors, urgent appeals and communications to Governments regarding human rights violations against human rights defenders; – assistance in the follow-up of cases; – Analysis of replies received from Governments and preparation of summaries for inclusion in the annual report; – assistance to the Special Rapporteur in the preparation of background documents for official missions; – Support for cooperation with non-governmental organizations for the proper implementation of the mandate, if necessary. The objective of this course is to support the work of the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders at the African Commission on Human and Peoples` Rights (ACHPR). This is a 12-month position in Banjul/Cotonou. Candidates must be able to work in both English and French. Front Line Defenders will give priority to candidates who have experience as human rights defenders in Africa.
